Project narrative
Basement Excavation and Façade Retention
Abacus CDS engaged to provide temporary works design for the redevelopment of St Mary’s Lodge, a fire-damaged historic mansion in Stoke Newington. Supporting JMS Engineers - who led the structural and civil design - we developed excavation support and façade retention strategies to enable the safe formation of a new basement beneath the retained original structure.
Our scope included designing temporary works to maintain the stability of the stone façades during construction, while supporting complex basement excavation adjacent to sensitive building elements. Coordinated closely with the permanent works strategy, our designs ensured safe progress on site, preserving the heritage of the building while enabling modern structural upgrades.
This project reflects our ability to deliver intelligent temporary works solutions on restoration-led developments.
